The Heron Tennis Centre’s Christmas Party Celebrations, Annual Awards and Farewell to Coach Matt!
The Heron Tennis Centre’s Christmas parties and annual awards ceremonies were held at Heron on the last Saturday before Christmas.
The morning saw the juniors aged between 5-13 years come along for their party, which included something different from their normal Saturday sessions. There was Penguins and Polar Bears, Tennis Pictionary, Jail and other tennis games and races for the younger players and then tennis cricket, football and other team tennis games for the older players.
The afternoon saw the teenagers (and a few parents!) go to Newquay Sports Centre for squash, badminton, table tennis and football before the evening party for the adults. The evening saw the adults celebrate 2019's tennis year with hand-rolled pizzas cooked in the pizza ovens courtesy of Simon and Tommy at the Courtside Cafe. Members and their guests were welcomed to the party with live saxophone music from Heron youngster Archie Mallett before the party got into full swing with cocktails and good times!
There were two annual awards ceremonies in the day when Heron celebrated its leading players, most improved players and the highlights of 2019!

Matt was stepping down from his Head Pro role after being at Heron since it's opening in 2004. Matt played the exhibition match at the opening, has inspired hundreds of toddlers, juniors, adults and senior players, and helped establish Heron and Ace Academy's junior and adult coaching programmes as being among the best club programmes in the south-west. Matt will be missed and to help him remember his time at Heron, he was presented with an engraved Dartington Crystal bowl by Coach Steve A and Jo Laidlaw, one of Matt's leading pupils who he has coached since he was 7. Coach Steve A gave the speech at the awards ceremony and said: "You have greatly helped Heron and Ace become established and simply put, I could not have done my role as Director of Coaching without you! You will be missed, thank you!" Coach Steve A went on to thank all parents and relatives who bring their children to tennis, the Heron coaches for their efforts in 2019, and the older juniors and young adult players, some of whom have gone on to play professional events and represent their universities in the UK and the USA, for their help at the parties and being players and people the young ones look up to!
